Introduction:
A new production of Bastien und Bastienne, the first singspiel written by Mozart when he was twelve, provides a link to the earliest origins. This innocent comedy about relationships is presented in a double-bill with a satirical work: Der Schauspieldirektor ("The Impresario"). Mozart composed this in the same year as Figaro using a libretto by Stephanie, who also wrote the text for Die Entführung. The first performance of Der Schauspieldirektor took place in 1786 as part of a festive competition that included Salieri’s Prima la musica e poi le parole in the Orangery of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna.
